How to Install Blender 2.76b in Ubuntu 15.10, 14.04 via PPA

Blender, a professional free and open-source 3D graphics software, has reached the 2.76b release. The ‘b’ release brings a few bugfixes to the 2.76 release which was released a month ago.

Install / Upgrade Blender via PPA:

Besides installing from the official binary manually. you can install Blender and receive future updates using a PPA repository.

Thomas Schiex is maintaining a PPA with latest Blender packages, support for Ubuntu 15.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 so far. Follow below steps to add PPA and install/upgrade Blender.

1. Add PPA.

NOTE: As an unofficial PPA, you may first check the PPA page for the current Blender packages and supported Ubuntu editions.

Open terminal from Unity Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, run below command to add PPA:

Type your password when it asks (type in mind and hit enter, there’s no display when typing password).

2. If you have a previous installed via Ubuntu Software Center or PPA, launch Software Updater and upgrade Blender after checking for updates.

Or, install it via Software Center (check updates needed), Synaptic Package Manager, or via commands:

    Blender – free CG animation software to rival industry giants

    Sophisticated computer animation programs such as Autodesk Maya, Softimage and 3ds Max can cost thousands but there is a free program called Blender that offers many of the same features. Some impressive animation has been produced with Blender including Lighthouse (2008), Kajimba Trailer (2009) and Sintel (2010).

    The Blender software is available free from the blender.org website in versions for Windows, Linux or Mac. I installed the 64 bit version on my windows 7 system and started the program. The opening screen was packed with options. In some ways it was like being faced with an aircraft flight deck. A quick scan of the manual told me that this was a powerful program. However, it turned out that most buttons are on default settings and it is possible to get started by learning some basic controls. Your mouse is like a joystick and will fly you around the scene. You can also use the mouse to grab objects and manipulate them.

    I decided the easiest way to get familiar with Blender was to view a few video tutorials. Fortunately there are lots of tutorials available on a number of websites. The blender.org website has links to many of them. There are some fast track to learning videos on the Blender Cookie website. I watched their Interface and Navigation tutorial and then decided to try some hands-on work with their Intro to Animation.

    I moved the Blender window to the left of my screen and played the video on the right. By watching a bit of the video, then stopping it and following the instructions, I soon had a short animation of a cube moving around the screen. By creating a few key frames at intervals and letting the software do the in-between frames I got some smooth movement.

    Another instruction video from Blender Cookie was called Creating a Simple Claymation Style Scene. It demonstrates how one model tree, one flower and one rock can be duplicated many times by the software. Add some green hills and a grazing cow to create a peaceful country scene. This gaves an idea of how the program could be used to make some delightful movies for young children. And maybe older children could use it to create their own entertainment.

    Blender also has a games engine. I watched a video on how to make a simple platform game. There is a lot to learn for game programming but if your interests lie in that direction the tools are there.

    An interesting section on the Blender website is called ‘Blend Swap’. This is where anybody can deposit their Blender models for others to download and use. It is very inspirational just to browse the models on offer. One of the most downloaded models was an attractive female called Tetine Elfe. This impressive model shows what this software is capable of.

    You may be wondering why such a great piece of software is available free of charge. The software that was to become Blender was originally written for Ton Roosendaal, the co-founder of Dutch animation studio NeoGeo. In 1998, Ton launched Not a Number (NaN), to market Blender. Sadly, due to disappointing sales NaN decided to shut down all operations in 2002. Enthusiastic support from the user community couldn’t justify leaving Blender to disappear into oblivion so Ton started the non-profit Blender Foundation.

    The Foundation’s first goal was to find a way to continue developing and promoting Blender as a community based open source project. The “Free Blender” campaign sought to raise 100,000 EUR so that the NaN investors would agree on open sourcing Blender. To everyone’s shock and surprise the campaign reached the 100,000 EUR goal in only seven weeks. Blender was released to the world under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Blender development continued since that day driven by a team of far-flung dedicated volunteers from around the world led by Blender’s original creator, Ton Roosendaal.

    If you are interested in computer animation then I urge you to give Blender a try. As it is free you have nothing to loose and everything to gain. It is a powerful program but you don’t have to learn it all, just play to your strengths. If you are primarily an animator then animate with some of the ready made models. If you are primarily a model maker then use it to make models for the ‘Blend Swap’. There is an active Blender community so you may eventually be able to join forces with others to work on a joint project.

    Below is a list of tutorials that will help the beginner. Please watch the 80 second video on installing the software as are choices to be made and the video gives you some useful tips. Then work your way through the other training videos and you will soon have an all round understanding of the software.

    Blender was developed as an in-house application by the Dutch animation studio NeoGeo and Not a Number Technologies (NaN). It was primarily authored by Ton Roosendaal. who had previously written a ray tracer called Traces for Amiga in 1989. The name "Blender" was inspired by a song by Yello. from the album Baby . [ 3 ]

    Roosendaal founded NaN in June 1998 to further develop and distribute the program. The program was initially distributed as shareware until NaN went bankrupt in 2002.

    The creditors agreed to release Blender under the terms of the GNU General Public License. for a one-time payment of €100,000 (US$100,670 at the time). On July 18, 2002, a Blender funding campaign was started by Roosendaal in order to collect donations and on September 7, 2002 it was announced that enough funds had been collected and that the Blender source code would be released. Today, Blender is free. open-source software and is, apart from the two half-time employees and the two full-time employees of the Blender Institute, developed by the community. [ 4 ]

    The Blender Foundation initially reserved the right to use dual licensing. so that, in addition to GNU GPL, Blender would have been available also under the "Blender License", which did not require disclosing source code but required payments to the Blender Foundation. However, this option was never exercised and was suspended indefinitely in 2005. [ 5 ] Currently, Blender is solely available under GNU GPL.

    In January/February 2002 it was quite clear that NaN could not survive and would close the doors in March. Nevertheless, they found the energy for doing at least one more release: 2.25. As a sort-of easter egg. a last personal tag, the artists and developers decided to add a 3D model of a chimpanzee. It was created by Willem-Paul van Overbruggen (SLiD3), who named it Suzanne after the orangutan in the Kevin Smith film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back .

    Suzanne is Blender's alternative to more common test models such as the Utah Teapot and the Stanford Bunny. A low-polygon model with only 500 faces, Suzanne is often used as a quick and easy way to test material, animation, rigs, texture, and lighting setups, and is also frequently used in joke images [ citation needed ]. Suzanne is still included in Blender 2.63. The largest Blender contest gives out an award called the Suzanne Awards .

    Blender has a relatively small installation size, of about 70 megabytes for builds and 115 megabytes for official releases. Official versions of the software are released for Linux. Mac OS X. Microsoft Windows. and FreeBSD. [ 6 ] Though it is often distributed without extensive example scenes found in some other programs, [ 7 ] the software contains features that are characteristic of high-end 3D software. [ 8 ] Among its capabilities are:

    • Support for a variety of geometric primitives, including polygon meshes. fast subdivision surface modeling, Bezier curves. NURBS surfaces. metaballs. digital sculpting. outline font. and a new n-gon modeling system called B-mesh.
    • Internal render engine with scanline ray tracing. indirect lighting, and ambient occlusion that can export in a wide variety of formats.
    • Experimental new Cycles pathtracer render engine.
    • Integration with a number of external render engines through plugins.
    • Keyframed animation tools including inverse kinematics. armature (skeletal), hook, curve and lattice-based deformations, shape keys (morphing ), non-linear animation, constraints, and vertex weighting.
    • Simulation tools for Soft body dynamics including mesh collision detection, LBM fluid dynamics, smoke simulation, and Bullet rigid body dynamics.
    • A particle system which includes support for particle-based hair.
    • Modifiers to apply non-destructive effects.
    • Python scripting for tool creation and prototyping, game logic, importing and/or exporting from other formats, task automation and custom tools.

    User interface

    Blender has had a reputation as a program that is difficult to learn. Nearly every function has a direct keyboard shortcut, and with the number of functions Blender offers this results in several different shortcuts per key. Since Blender became open source, there has been effort to add comprehensive contextual menus as well as make the tool use more logical and streamlined. There have also been efforts to visually enhance the user interface, with the introduction of color themes, transparent floating widgets, a new and improved object tree overview, and other small improvements (color picker widget, etc.). An example for a context menu taken from the word processor Microsoft Word The term context menu is commonly used for menus which pop up when clicking an item in a graphical user interface, offering a list of options which vary depending on the context of the action, the application.

    Blender's user interface incorporates the following concepts:

    Editing modes The two primary modes of work are Object Mode and Edit Mode. which are toggled with the Tab key. Object mode is used to manipulate individual objects as a unit, while Edit mode is used to manipulate the actual object data. For example, Object Mode can be used to move, scale, and rotate entire polygon meshes, and Edit Mode can be used to manipulate the individual vertices of a single mesh. There are also several other modes, such as Vertex Paint, Weight Paint, and UV Mapping. Hotkey utilization Most of the commands are accessible via hotkeys. Until the 2.x and especially the 2.3x versions, this was in fact the only way to give commands, and this was largely responsible for creating Blender's reputation as a difficult-to-learn program. The new versions have more comprehensive GUI menus. Numeric input Numeric buttons can directly be "dragged" to change their value without the need to aim at a particular widget, thus saving screen real estate and time. Both sliders and number buttons can be constrained to various step sizes with modifiers like the CTRL and SHIFT keys. Python expressions can also be typed directly into number entry fields, allowing mathematical expressions to be used to specify values. Workspace management The Blender GUI is made up of one or more screens, each of which can be divided into sections and subsections that can be of any type of Blender's views or window-types. Each window-type's own GUI elements can be controlled with the same tools that manipulate 3D view - for example one can zoom in and out of GUI-buttons in the same way one zooms in and out in the 3D viewport. The GUI viewport and screen layout is fully user customizable. It is possible to set up the interface for specific tasks such as video editing or UV mapping or texturing by hiding features not utilized for the task.

    A keyboard shortcut (also known as an accelerator key, shortcut key, or hotkey) is a set of keyboard keys that when pressed simultaneously, perform a predefined task. A graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface which allows people to interact with a computer and computer-controlled devices which employ graphical icons, visual indicators or special graphical elements called widgets, along with text labels or text navigation to represent the information and actions available to. Python is a high-level programming language first released by Guido van Rossum in 1991. UV Mapping is a 3D modelling process of making a 2D map representing a 3D model.

    Технология, реализованная в Blender, позволяет видоизменять интерфейс программы до неузнаваемости. Изюминка состоит в том, что во время создания 3-мерной сцены, окно утилиты можно разделить на части, каждая из них будет представлять собой независимое окно с определенным видом 3D сцены, настройками объекта, линейкой временной шкалы.

    Количество таких частей ограничивается лишь разрешением экрана. Независимо от их числа, они никогда не будут между собой пересекаться и накладываться друг на друга.

    Еще одна положительная сторона Blender - великолепная поддержка "горячих" клавиш. С их помощью можно выполнять любые операции. Разумеется, сочетаний много, поэтому тяжело запомнить их все сразу, но их знание существенно упрощает работу в программе.

    Создание 3-мерных моделей выполняется посредством полигональных и NURBS-поверхностей. Приложение также располагает инструментами сплайнового моделирования, а для формирования 3D-объектов используются еще кривые Безье и В-сплайны.

    Инструментарий утилиты настолько универсален, что посредством Blender можно воссоздавать составные органические формы. Для этого применяются метаболы и технология "3-мерной лепки" при помощи виртуальных кистей. Изменения в геометрию вносятся в режиме симметрии, что крайне необходимо в процессе моделирования персонажей.

    Программа пригодна для создания обычной анимации и работы над оснасткой персонажей. Приложение позволяет формировать скелет и привязывать кости к внешней оболочке. Работа редактора основывается на прямой и инверсной кинематике.

    While looking at the amazing stuff that our fan community is producing, we cannot help but admire the passion for our games. But of course the tools are the key for creation of the best results. We are aware that despite valiant efforts to reverse-engineer our formats, the current tools in the hands of the modding community aren't ideal yet.

    Today we would like to announce that we are working on SCS Blender Tools. which we will make available for everybody with creative passion for our games.

    As you may have already guessed we will use Blender to base our SCS Blender Tools on. Blender is fast, flexible, with good documentation and most importantly Free, without need to worry for having expensive licenses for commercial packages like Maya or 3d Studio Max.

    SCS Blender Tools we are building are going to be 100% "developer grade". The package will be using exactly the same approaches and workflows we use for creating our games, in fact some people on SCS team plan to start using them on a daily basis, replacing current tool pipeline. With SCS Blender Tools, it will be possible to comfortably create models, texture them, assign and tweak correct materials, and export everything to the engine.

    The plan is that with SCS Blender Tools it will cover everything - from the simplest models of buildings to fully fledged trucks, just as us developers are doing it. With provided documentation we hope to see even higher quality creations from our modding community. With community-created assets in source form compatible with SCS Software's internal processes, and with the map editor a native part of the game itself, this may open up huge opportunities for the future.

    Переключение языка программы

    Открываем File - User Preferences (или Ctrl+Alt+U) - System - ставим галочку International Fonts (внизу слева прокруткой или растянуть окно) - выбираем требуемый язык (русский или ставим По умолчанию (Default) - и включаем Translate: Interface (интерфейс), Tooltips (Подсказки), Mew Data (Новые данные).
